'08 and beyond

This New Year's, I am not making resolutions. I never have been very good at keeping them anyway.

But for '08, I am changing some things.

I'm talking about a new set of priorities that I want to shape the rest of my years, not just this one.

These aren't resolutions like "quit smoking"; these are principles that will help me get to where I want to go.

I call these my New Year's Affirmations.

1. More downtime

2. Less time in the car

3. More time making music

4. No more J.O.B. - "just over broke"

5. Make money creatively

6. Save money creatively

7. Travel

8. Spend more time making love

I have ended '07 on such a contemplative note, and these have been the things rattling around in my head. If you read this, its probably because you know the music I make with tPC, but there is so much more to me than that, and I feel like I don't share it with the world because I am spending too much time keeping up in the rat race.

But f*ck that. The time's come for me to get mine.

J. Space's Grammy Picks

Toxic or tasteful? Who would you choose?

Big shout-out to Feist for her Best New Artist nomination. That's a big award to win, cause there's really only one shot at it.

She certainly deserves it, but she may lose out to Wino, simply because the inebriated "Rehab" singer has had more time in the press.

However, Feist should walk away with at least one piece of hardware. My pick is she'll win Pop Vocal Album, in a "thats what you get, you coked up slut" upset.

I know Garth Trinidad and Norman with Nu-Soul are grinning from ear to ear!

They have supported Vikter Duplaix for quite some time now, and his Urban/Alternative Performance nom is such an honor.

Vik's "Make A Baby" has almost expanded the Space fam a couple times, ya heard!

So, it's a shame that I gotta pick Lupe in that category, but he's due. Plus, the Grammy voters are just more familiar with him and his projects.

Below are my picks in red, in the categories I felt relevant. Enjoy!

You Know You Have a Heart When It Hurts

I have been going through some less-than-stellar personal issues the past few weeks....

Its really taken the fire out of everything I do with my music, because I have been pouring so much into this situation, trying to make things right

But I don't think I can win this one

So, my apologies for not being a more consistent producer/blogger/entertainer/friend

But I promise you

Better times are coming

Oh yeah,

and we have a show on Friday

and Saturday

Those should help.

Until then, if you got some words of encouragement, email me

Well, we evolved bigger dicks too, FUCKA

Do You Remember Soundclick?

tPC (formerly People's Choice) - "Hope" 2004

Yey and I were bullsh*ttin' at the Spacestation last night....talking about some new songs we are bringin' back to our live set, which led to a "oh shit, I forget about..." moment with our Soundclick page.

We used to be big heads for this, but honestly, we haven't updated it since MySpace came along. Which is a shame, because there are some things that Soundclick does better for the artist. These easy embedded players for example. And the built-in mailing lists. But it's also kinda cool cause its now a time capsule into where we were a few years ago...

So any way, this is a gem we recorded in Florida, called "Hope". Some kinda gritty, out the box shit indicative of what we were doing right around the time we moved to LA.

And just as a bonus, peep this tune we did, ironically RIGHT RIGHT before we moved, called "Welcome to Florida". An updated rendition of this joint may be poppin' up on a future release...

My Favorite Non-Hip-Hop Artists

This week everybody is talking about Radiohead, and their unconventional method of releasing their new album, In Rainbows.

Listening to the album as I got ready to blog, I thought to myself "Radiohead is one of those non-hip-hop groups that I like so much that it influences the hip-hop I make."

Why? Well, their use of programming and live instruments, combined with Thom's emotion-stirring voice, make me feel as if there is more I can squeeze from four minutes than just the traditional verse-hook-verse arrangement hip-hop tends to deliver. The first song I heard by Radiohead was "There There", and they continue to amaze me. Every time I listen to their music. I want to rush to the studio and create music that builds an emotional connection like that......

Who else falls in this category?

The Shins - with these guys, it's their use of melody and their Ivy-League-clever lyrics. Case in point, "Sea Legs": "girl, if you're a seascape, I'm a listing boat, for the thing carries every hope. I invest in a single lie." What a play on words! You definitely don't catch it on the first listen, and you get the feeling that's specifically what the band intended. I'm not an MC, but lyrics like this trigger lightbulbs when I hear hip-hop MCs achieve the same level of complexity in their similes and metaphors. Hence why I work with Yeyo. I need poets in the booth; not just dudes with "hot sixteens".

4Hero - Close enough to the hip-hop diaspora to be gettable (they even have a track with Phonte). I'd say they inspire me with their use of strings and horns, which so many producers shy away from because they can't get them in the studio and recorded correctly. But, man oh man, when the strings drop in at the beginning of their new album "Play With the Changes", I'm in heaven. I can't wait until the first sessions I have with a full string section.

John Mayer - Smooth guitar, great arrangements, lilting falsetto. Plus, the feeling that he is the kind of guy I would have smoked joints with in high school, even though he was into blues and I was bangin' Wu-Tang Clan. As evidenced by his work with Kanye, ?uest, and others, dude's got some soul. And "Continuum" is a classic in my mind. You can play it at any event and nobody will front on you (well, maybe not Tuesday at Cinespace). John Mayer shows that when you are honest and heartfelt, your appeal is universal.

Nirvana - the fuel for my musical awakening in junior high. The way they raged, yet were such brilliant musicians - it showed me that rebellion and musicianship were not mutually exclusive. If you listen to a Nirvana song, you get a feeling for each piece of the song...they use dynamics like no other. Case in point: their biggest hit, "Smells like Teen Spirit". The verses are supported by Grohl's solid drumming, Krist's chugging bass line, and two simple guitar notes, repeated every two bars. I think of Nirvana whenever I am trying to build a solid transition between a mellow verse and a punchy hook.

Phoenix - groovy Frenchmen. One thing that always jumps out at me about their records is how the bass and drums move so fluidly together. And their hooks make great sing-alongs, especially "Everything is Everything", with its poignant declartion: "the more I talk about it, the less I do control". They haven't received the respect they desrve in the States, but I can't get why. I have yet to hear a Phoenix song I didn't like. And hey, they're French (see: Daft Punk, Justice, et al.)

Silversun Pickups - inspirational because their record Carnavas was produced by a mentor to me when I first got to LA, Dave Cooley. I listen to Silversun intently because this is a well-produced, recorded, and mixed album. Everything feels so natural, it's no surprise to me they are blowing up. This sets the bar for me when I get to produce my first record for a band. Just pure awesomeness on a musical and sonic level.

M.I.A. - see my previous posts. She is the beacon of post-hip-hop world music to me, as I think she is for many others. Plus, I traveled around the world too, so I can really get her global approach. "I put people on the map who never seen a map"....thats whats up right there. Music as a tool for good rather than a vehicle for celebrity. What a concept.

Feist - a new-found love of mine. I first heard "My Moon My Man", and I dug the groove. So solid, yet easy to listen to, as are all Feist records, because her voice sounds like a bird. But, it was the stand-out track "The Water" that inspired me. It sounds haunting, aching, longing.....and sparse. Since I have heard that, I have been trying to do less with more.

That's the most notable of my influences, as it pertains to my actual music-making. Honorable mentions go to: Bloc Party, Dave Matthews Band, The Bravery, Thievery Corporation, Weekend Players, and Bjork.

Run Fat Boy

In this day and age, taking care of your health is important.

LA is an image-conscious town, but, on the real, hitting the gym and keeping the weight off is a "good look" for your life in general.

Both Yeyo and I have been on some different missions lately to lose weight. Yeyo uses fasting and nutrition to stave off the pounds, while I use an exercise routine at the gym, courtesy of RunFatBoy.net. No bullsh*t.

RUN FAT BOY (Exercise Planner)

I was already going to the gym, but I felt like I wasn't getting results, and I couldn't afford to hire a personal trainer. I heard about this site and decided to give it a try.

It's basically a calendar, with a food tracker, and an attached journal. The computer asks you basic life questions to gauge your fitness, and then spits out an exercise routine.

If you have already done some of these exercises, you know what weight is too much or too little for you to lift. You simply click "too easy" or "too hard" next to that exercise, and the program updates it for you.

Also built into every exercise is a Google video clip showing you how to do it, so you don't hurt yourself. It's really helpful, because I get Tricep Pulldowns mixed up with Pushdowns or Tricep Extensions. The short vids help sort me out, and keep me from fuckin up the Spacesuit.

The food tracker is child-simple, and if you want to share your experiences, or pictures of yourself as you lose weight, it's all right there, in the convenient set-up of most blogs you read.

I've been out in for almost a month now, and the muscle game is getting pretty serious. RunFatBoy comes highly recommended.

Bringin Back the Boom Bap

Well, tPC is getting ready to take ease up a bit on live shows this fall while we work on our next project, a very cool DVD we are compiling (more on that later)...

...but before we go, it's time for another night of random debauchery, this time on Sunset.

tPC, alonsgide, DJ Mark 1, and the legendary Soopafly, will be tearing up Hip-Hop Cafe....

It's an 80's/90s throwback party, so Mark 1 has some tricks up sleeve for y'all. Soopafly is definitely going to be reppin' his part of the 90s G-Funk revolution, and his music through today, and tPC, well, we are just Bringing Back the Boom Bap, in pretty much all we do.

I know they say the weather might get shitty and all, but I still want you to come out. There may be alot of groups trying to build careers here in Lost Angeles, but trust me, nobody likes you more than us.

We're friends right?

So, pack a jacket, come out and shake your tailfeather with tPC tonight. And oh, it's ladies free before 11. How old-school is that?

Peace.....

Skipped-Over Flicks

View from my window...note: this ain't Hollywood

I spent more-than-a-little time this weekend cleaning the Spacestation, lounging with the nuggets, and watching the boob tube.

Doing so, I stumbled across two flicks in the loveable jungle that is Time Warner Cable On Demand. Sometimes good films don't get the publicity they deserve, but they always end up somewhere in the viewing landscape.

So, thanks to Hollywood's inability to properly market these easily enjoyed gems, here are my Skipped-Over recommendations, thanks to a lazy weekend:

Duma
Having travelled to Africa, I was intrigued by the byline of this movie, which follows a young boy as he takes his adopted cheetah back to its wild home, and along the way, gets lost in the desert. The cinematography is beautiful; the shots wide, empty, and colorful.

The story is mostly about the boy's journey, and his coming to terms with the death of his father, and the loss of his one true friend, his cheetah. This is a great film, for film-lovers, not popcorn-poppers.

Lord of War
This plays more like a "Blow" for the arms race. Cage coolly delivers a voice-over narrative about his rise as a gun-runner in post-Cold War Ukraine and Africa.

The film shows how guns, especially AK-47s, are able to make it into the hands of children, yet the characters never struggle with this issue. Cage himself is more physical comedy han earnest serious. I enjoyed the movie, but found it lacked in substance. Better to watch and just chuckle at some of the dry jokes. No heavy lifting.

After that, this weekend's dose of popcorn butter was provided by Bourne Ultimatum....and it was action-movie-fast, roof-jumpin', window-smashin' good fun, I must say.

Catch Me at the Border, I Got Visas in my Name

I fly like paper get high like planes....

I was a fan of M.I.A. when she first emerged in '05, and I enjoyed Arular very much. When I first put it on, it was like nothing I had ever heard, a soundclash reminiscent of Breakbeat Era having BSDM sex with Punjabi MC. I was enthralled.

My interest waned after her style got co-opted, and suddenly every hipster chick in LA was a neon-colored electro-spittin' passport-flossing pseudo-revolutionary.

J no play with trends, so I kindly stepped to the side and let others feast on the carcass that was Miss Arulpragasam's popularity at the moment.

A couple years have passed, and many of the same style-bitin' hipsters have now hopped onto other trends, be they retro plastic shades, shiny Lycra leggings, or Chromeo.

M.I.A., meanwhile, has been traveling the globe, constructing Kala with a host of otherwise undiscoverable musicians, and "stepping the game up", as many artists talk about, but never do.

I don't get too excited about whole albums these days, but this one has got me open. "Paper Planes" has been on steady rotation with me for a week now, and I plan on copping the rest of the album when it hits retailers on Tuesday (08.20.07)

Yes, whole bootlegs are out there, but this project should be supported with currency of some sort. As an artist who strives to do ART, and not commerce, I fully support Kala, and officially add it to my Albums That Must Be Heard or You Are Not Cool list.

Everybodys Livin' for the Weekend

It was just one of those weekends....things fell into place effortlessly, friends were easy to track down, none of the parties were disappointing, and I ate barbecue.Twice.

Friday, chopped it up with the homie Substantial, backstage before QN5 Megashow. Met Deacon from Cunninglynguists, as well. If you didn't go to QN5, you missed out....check out more here

Saturday was all about the FAMU alumni picnic. Our illustrious school on the highest of seven hills, was hanging in Baldwin Hills, off in a cozy corner of Hahn park, grillin' and chillin'. Saw many old friends, some business connects, and just felt that old school Rattler love.

Saturday night was the ?uestlove jump-off at Royale....he kept it real upbeat, old-school, grown & sexy. I had a great time. Saw so many heads in the spot.....Pic, Tendai, Jackson Perry, Carey Williams, my boy Moon Man John....we had a blast. Mama rocked the ill heels too! Complained about her feet hurting, but I had the baddest chick in the game wearin my chain....see exhibit A above. Haha.

Plus, the Weapons of Mass Construction tee was hurting em......

Sunday, went to the dealership to change this...

...for this

But they were officially player-hating! Another $5000 down, plus the trade-in! You can't be serious. I will just cop it. Fuck it. Three whips, its nuthin! Let me stop playin'. But really, the gas guzzler gots to go....but for now, the xD must wait for another weekend. Damn finance managers, fuck 'em!

After that, had to make sure I kept my gym focus on...can't let The Urban Princess have all the fun.

Always keep my digital handy, so I got some exclusive i-Report footage of a car on fire...

A good lesson on keeping your engine clean and getting your oil checked, huh buddy!

24Hr Fitness and I then met in brutal fury of physical will and determination...otherwise known as my quest to NOT BE FAT.

ARM WORKOUT+AB SOLO+ELLIPTICAL+SAUNA+STEAM>J. Space

Finally, capped the weekend with some quality time at Elevation....as Jackson says, "Sunday is the new Saturday". I agree.

Quest: Music Choice On-Demand

Its the build-up to the release of our next video, "The O.N.E.", and I am still servicing our last one, "Smokers Delight"! Oh well, at least the tPC name will be fresh in the programmers' minds when the new vid hits the streets in a couple of weeks.

I finally got some clean version beta masters I needed fr0m C-Dub, so it was time to get a kit to DJ Mecca, Music Choice's programmer of urban formats.

Even though we are just servicing the beta version of the video, I always send along a DVD version, for the programmer's office, so they can pop it in and watch it right then on their computer or TV. Gotta include a copy of the album and some business cards, too.

I always do my best to create "matching luggage": DVD, CD, and press kit packaging that goes together. Here I used the smoking girl motif on all of my items...after all, the song is called "Smokers Delight".

Nothing says "professional" to me like good ol' branding, so I make sure to include our logo on our address label. My hope is that by looking the part, it will make sure she remembers who she is getting this package from, and hopefully, will recognize our brand from previous viewing.

After that, it's in the hands of the man....even though I used USPS today, instead of a UPS or DHL, I still made sure to get a tracking number. Don't go to all of the trouble of getting your video to a programmer, only to have it get lost along the way and you don't know it!
